In a race to overtake AMD, Intel and Micron Technology joined hands for developing NAND flash chips with a 3 -bits-per-cell technology. NAND flash chips help in storage of data in consumer devices like mobile phones, music players, digital camera and USB drives. With the beginning of production of 3-bpc technology, the cost per flash bit decreases. The 3-bpc technology is a 50 per cent increase from the standard 2-bpc, which translates into an 8 GB USB flash drive built to store 12 GB of data without the increase in its size.
The NAND flash chip is designed and manufactured by IM Flash Technology, the joint venture between the two chipmakers, will be making flash cards, USB drives and other devices.
